Practicing restraint

Dutch dairy giant FrieslandCampina has developed an instrument for compensating farmers not to overproduce milk, seeing as how European prices remain low. This to me is an example of how world market trends are affecting dairy processors everywhere. The dairy co-operative recognises that without the farmers, there is no milk supply. The question then becomes whether smaller milk processors could do the same. I find it encouraging, but do think that perhaps governments should also be doing something more to help farming. The free market often acts in a brutal manner, and it’s no good helping out after the cows have been sold and milk production has moved elsewhere. FrieslandCampina is doing good work this way.

In other news, Lemmie from Motorhead (If you didn’t see Valio’s moving tribute to Lemmy, please look it up on YouTube.) has sadly been joined by David Bowie this week. We here at Dairy Industries are very sorry to hear of both their passings. Losing a legend is never easy. As usual, our house will be filled with Bowie’s music, this time in tribute. As the man himself said, “I don’t know where I’m going from here but I promise it won’t be boring.” It never was.
