Shopping the megamarket

Believe it or not, I occasionally skip my local farmer’s market and go to supermarkets. I usually operate on the basis of the Devo song that ends with, “Freedom from choice, that’s what you want” and limit my shopping to smaller venues so that I am not overwhelmed by the options available. So, winding up in the absolutely enormous Tesco Extra that is situated in a nearby town was not the plan, but I was waiting for a smaller shop to open and they had free parking.

Ah! If my father were still alive, he’d want to visit this Tesco. (We once had to make a detour returning from Belgium to visit the gigantic Carrefour at Cité Europe outside Calais so he could admire the grandeur of that mega-supermarket.) It had everything you could want – clothing, eye care, pharmacy, photography shop and café. I didn’t even get to the other end of the store.

I wandered around, getting lost in clothing (I picked up a cute jacket for the boy king), and then gravitated to the yogurt aisle. Yes, this Tesco has an entire aisle devoted to yogurt. Greek, non-Greek, Turkish, bio, no-fat, all-fat, children’s, multi-packs, single pots, giant pots… you name it, it was there. It was somewhat glorious to behold. I selected my yogurt, one of the Arla skyr pots, with some kind of Nordic berries, for my lunch.

Then, eventually I found a sandwich to accompany it, and popcorn. And left. I would say that I am not sure that this is the best business model, but occasionally it’s worth seeing how vast the dairy aisle actually is, and how much scope there is for more innovation, in one place. I may just get back there soon to have a look at the cheese aisle.
