In the same boat

To say it has been an eventful week is an understatement. I am not sure I’ve seen so many people react in such an emotional way to world events, but we’ve seen an unexpected (well, at least the media didn’t expect it) president elected in the US, and the somewhat surreal sight of Nigel Farage being the first politician to visit the new leader. This year has been about expecting the unexpected.

Now there’s been an earthquake in New Zealand. Fonterra has assured all that its sites are not affected, but the pictures on the news looked like a fair bit of roadway had been damaged on the South Island. Our thoughts are with the New Zealanders, and I hope they get everything sorted out without too much trouble.

Overall, the year 2016 has not been especially kind to those of us who would like a quiet life, and it’s not over yet. Meanwhile, Germany and France are getting ready for election next year, and if the trend continues, there may be further tumult on world markets and governments.

However, some good news is that the Global Dairy Platform has released its annual review. It has been busy coordinating with the United Nations on sustainable development goals and its Agenda 2030, which “provides ongoing opportunities to demonstrate how the dairy sector can help address key needs for the growing global population.” Donald Moore, the executive director, also notes that the GDP has also been working on marketing to “yield a clear and relevant story,” about dairy globally. “The sector is strongest when it is fully aligned with a common goal – everyone in the same boat, facing the same direction and pulling the oars in perfect synchonisation towards the goal.” This is especially true when we are all facing choppy waters, both at home and internationally. Make sure you wear your life vests.
