Zimbabwe adds capacity

A dairy revitalisation programme has helped import 400 cows into Zimbabwe. This was coordinated by the Zimbabwe Association of Dairy Farmers and the Zimbabwe Industrial Trust.

The scheme is funded on a 25% levy on imported dairy products. The dairy sector in the country is currently operating at around 45% capacity, with a total herd of 26,000 and an output of five million litres per month. Demand is around 10 million litres per month. At its height, Zimbabwe had been able to produce 256 million litres in 1990. The government has spared dairy farms from compulsory acquisition under the land reform programme in order to help boost production.
