Germans care about their milk

Public interest in milk production in Germany appears to be evident in the purchasing decisions of milk. A new survey by Mintel shows that half of Germans (51%) see regional production as one of the most important factors influencing their purchase of milk. Around 72% of Germans would also want milk packaging to provide more information on the origin and production of the milk. Last year only 43% of consumers expressed this desire, which underlines the growing interest in the origin of milk.

Welfare of the dairy cows seems to be of particularly interest to the consumers. Animal-friendliness in milk production is an important factor for more than one-third (35%) of German consumers, with an upward trend: in 2016, 31% said the same.

About 68% of  German consumers are interested in milk from cows fed exclusively with fresh greenland feed, hay and grain.

In addition, Mintel notes that for many, fair wages for dairy farmers is crucial in their decision to milk: 37% of respondents stated “fair remuneration for dairy farmers” as one of the most important factors in purchasing decisions for milk.
