Swiss import more cheese

Switzerland exported 31,000 tonnes of cheese (roughly equivalent to the previous year’s period) in the first half of this year, while imports amounted to 30,500 tonnes, which is 4.4% more than the same period in 2016.

This is a continuation of the trend of rising imports. Compared to 2007, exports have declined by 20%, while imports have risen by 56%.

One of the reasons is the price difference: Swiss cheese costs an average of CHF8.20 (€7.20), while import cheese is sold on average at CHF6 (€5.26).

The population of Switzerland (8.47 million) consumed a total of 186,756 tonnes of cheese in 2016.
