Higher levels planned for Edeka milk

The Edeka supermarket chain in Germany has announced more commitment to the veterinary welfare of dairy cows. Both the Edeka stores and Net Marken discount stores belonging to the Edeka Group will lift the entire drinking milk assortment (fresh and long life milk) of their own brands to level 2 or higher of the German welfare system in 2022. This step is to be applied for further milk and dairy products.

From the spring of this year, all drinking milk products of the chain’s own brands Gut & Günstig (good and cheap), Edeka and Edeka Bio are to be gradually marked with the husbandry level 2 (stalling Plus), 3 (outside climate) or 4 (Premium).

The retail cooperative is now renouncing the lowest level 1 (all-year, traditional, inside) for dairy products on its supermarket shelves.
