A claimed healthier alternative to traditional ice cream is being launched this spring in Spanish supermarkets by leading international processor Danone. Yolado is the name and it’s a frozen yogurt. Danone says the product will be available to consumers as usual in the chill cabinet. The innovation: once brought home, it’s placed in the deep freeze prior to eating.

Danone adds that the launch of Yolado follows more than two years’ intensive development costing around €10 million. While cafes throughout the European mainland already offer frozen yogurt as an alternative to conventional ice cream, Danone claims its research has given a creamier taste and texture to the frozen low-fat yogurt (at 99 calories for 125 ml, about half that of conventional ice cream).

Made from fresh milk and pieces of fruit, Yolado will be marketed with strawberry, lemon or natural flavour, in 125 ml reclosable pots or in 500 ml containers as stracciatella.

According to Danone there are two reasons why Spain has been chosen for the launch of the dairy giant’s first frozen yogurt ice cream: The claimed extra-creamy texture effect was actually developed by Danone laboratories in Barcelona. Spain also happens to have the highest per capita consumption of yogurts in the world. For the new Yolado these consumers will be expected to pay an rrp of €2.49 for the 125 ml pots.
