USDA highlights Argentina as emerging exporter

The most recent US Department of Agriculture report shows that Argentina is beginning to move up as a global exporter of WMP, while the US is also increasingly exporting SMP worldwide. Traditionally, EU and New Zealand have been the major exporters. “With new countries looking to increase trade, compeititon is likely to increase,” Dairy Co’s Dairy Market Update comments. Types of products in demand are also evolving, with Chinese demand for SMP set to increase from 21% currently to 35%. China looks set to continue to be a major importer, with prediction for it to import 332,000 tonnes of WMP in 2012 and 180,000 tonnes of SMP. Other major importers are mexico, set to import 210,000 tonnes of SMP in 2012, and Algeria, with 180,000 tonnes of WMP in the same year.

New Zealand continues to be the major player, with an estimated 1.2m tonnes of WMP set to be exported in 2012, compared to nearest rival the EU, which will export 400,000 tonnes.
