Canada to curb milk protein imports
The Canadian Government is seeking to curb imports of milk protein concentrates.
It has announced it will start negotiations to invoke a World Trade Organisation mechanism, which allows countries to withdraw concessions agreed under the Uruguay Round and renegotiate tariff barriers.
It comes in response to dairy industry concerns about the increasing use of protein concentrates in making cheese and other dairy products. Canadian dairy producers and processors failed to reach a consensus on long term solutions to the challenges facing the industry.
The restrictions may be felt in New Zealand. The EU and Switzerland but imports from the US can’t be restricted due to the North American Free trade agreement.
