Small businesses unite

A recent visit to a local gelateria in my area of greater London reminded me of the amazing things small businesses are attempting to achieve, despite things like business rates and ever-increasing inputs. I came away delighting in the marvellous flavours they produced, but wondering why anyone would bother opening up on the British high street, once you’ve counted up the costs of doing business in this country.

Restrictive signage provisions, endless wrangles with local councils about permits, plus the costs of insurance, raw materials costs, employee issues and so forth. Not to mention the usual headaches of small businesses – it may seem glamourous to be your own boss, but often it winds up that you are the go-to person and general dogsbody for things like changing light fittings and calling the plumber.

Like other small business owners, they are a brave pair and I wish them lots of luck. They have a simply delicious gelato product. I for one will frequent the shops until they give up and do mail order or wholesale only. And then I will seek it out. Support your small businesses, because they are your neighbours.
