SMA infant milk recalled

SMA Nutrition, the UK’s number one infant formula manufacturer, has recalled batches of its milk powders after a baby contracted a rare strain of botulism.
The products affected were cans of SMA Gold and SMA White, manufactured in October 1998 with the expiry dates 28/10/2001 and 28/11/2001. Because of the imminent use by dates, the company believes that few products remain in circulation. Of the 500,000 tins that went on sale almost three years ago 156 have so far been returned.
The action is being taken as a result of tests carried out on food products used in the home of the infant who contracted the disease. SMA Gold tested positive for the bacteria C botulinum type B, the same strain to afflict the child. No other cases have been reported.
An SMA spokesperson said the cause of the contamination was as yet unknown but that the company was working closely with the UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) to determine its origin and to ensure that it did not happen again.
