Mega milkflows for the North
New Zealand Dairy Group’s (NZDG) North Island daily milk flow has nearly doubled from eight million litres to 14.1 million litres since last year.
The increased production was due to consistent rainfall and greater availability of animal feed, claimed NZDG’s general manager Peter Spooner.
He also said that the lift in milk production was quite phenomenal for this time of year and in particular boosted the production of high value milk powders. The increase was also good news for farmers, claimed Spooner, who benefited from a record payment forecast of $4.80 (2.33 euro) per kg of milk solids.
The picture was not the same in the South Island where a drier than normal Autumn took its toll in some areas. Production for the season was still up, however, by 13%.
