Fonterra concentrates milk to reduce transport
As part of a programme to improve transport efficiency, New Zealand based Fonterra has started using new technology to concentrate milk before it’s transported.
The programme has allowed Fonterra to cut its milk tanker fleet by 5% last year, despite an increase in milk supply. The company says it has saved an estimated 3,000 tanker trips per year reducing the milk. Using rail to transport most of its processed dairy products has also reduced carbon emissions by 3,000 tonnes, Fonterra estimates.
