New transparent pricing systems, more collaborative supply chain relationships and a stronger drive to profitable growth have all been features of the latest White Paper from Dairy UK. “The report sets out the evidence as to how the industry has continued to improve its competitive position through capital investment and rationalisation of processing capacity by processors and a range of tools to help dairy farmers focus on cost efficiency,” Jim Begg, director general of Dairy UK notes. Milk output has recovered from last year’s wet weather and farmer confidence has also improved in the interim, the report says, with 42 per cent of respondents saying their outloom for the next 12 months is extremely or very confident.

Tim Bennett, chairman of DairyCo says, “Internationally, British farmers stand up well to comparison with leading dairy producing countries. The report tells us the main drivers of success are matching farm system to available resources and then managing the system really well.”

On the consumer side, yogurt is seen as a star performer as fresh dairy products contineu to grow steadily, with consumption increasing by 37% during the 10 years to 2011. Functional drinks have driven this trend as well.
