The European Court of Justice’s recent ruling to give Greek feta Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) has caused some consternation in the cheesemaking industry, not least in the UK, Germany and Denmark. Right, Judy Bell, the UK’s sole producer of English feta cheese, will have to rebrand Yorkshire feta by 2007, according to the court.

However, the only feta producer in the UK, Shepherds Purse Cheeses, has reacted with dismay, as its Yorkshire feta brand must be repackaged and rebranded by the October 2007 deadline.
