Whey drinks waves in Germany

GERMANY – Whey-based drinks are booming in Germany. Less than five years ago there were only two major producers of whey drinks in Germany – although plenty of small dairies were, then as now, successfully selling them to a limited market.

Now, eleven of Germany’s top dairies are marketing whey drinks in a boom atmosphere that last year saw sales increase by 27.5% and whey retail earnings rise by 32.5%, according to the marketing agency Zentrale Markt und Preisberichtstelle (ZMP).

Almighurt Molke Drink from the private family dairy Ehrmann in Bavaria is selling especially well. Its taste is made smoother by adding yogurt and introducing flavours such as lime plus apple or orange and mango.
