USA – The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released a draft risk assessment regarding the safety of food products derived from animal clones, which indicates they are as safe as non-clone counterparts.

The draft builds on the findings of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), and it said that, based on all available evidence, healthy adult clones are virtually indistinguishable from their natural counterparts, as are the resultant products.

The data mainly addressed cattle and goats, as well as pigs, and is part of a process undertaken by the FDA to assess the safety of food products derived from cloned animals.

The FDA will continue to assess the potential risk of cloned goods, before finalising the risk assessment or reaching any decisions about the safety of products derived from animal clones.
