Ben & Jerry’s planning CBD ice cream

Ice cream brand Ben & Jerry’s is developing a CBD infused ice cream to launch if-and-when the FDA approves its use in food.

The US company’s decision to add CBD to its products as soon as the plant extract is legalised at the federal level comes as the market of CBD-infused products has exploded over the past several years.

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a chemical compound from the cannabis plant. Its supporters claim it produces relaxation and calm, but unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is not psychoactive and will not get a user high.

A recent National Restaurant Association survey found that three in four chefs named CBD – and cannabis-infused food as a hot trend in 2019.

“We’re doing this for our fans,” said Ben & Jerry’s CEO Matthew McCarthy. “We’ve listened and brought them everything from Non-Dairy indulgences to on-the-go portions with our Pint Slices. We aspire to love our fans more than they love us and we want to give them what they’re looking for in a Ben & Jerry’s way.”

Provided the use of CBD is approved, Ben & Jerry’s is looking to use locally sourced CBD from Vermont where the company is based.
