Organic labels
The German milk processors’ organisation Milchindustrieverband (MIV) has warned that the government risks confusing the consumer with its plans for a new two-tier labelling system.
A general welcome has been given to the launch of an overall organic food label backed by the worldwide accepted IFOAM standards. This certificate will cover all approved organic foods.
However, MIV managing director Eberhard Hetzner said he believed confusion would be the result of a second quality label, which will apply to conventional food and dairy products.
Hetzner said he was concerned products not carrying the organic label might be regarded as unsafe by the public.
