Drinking milk still tops in Austria

In Austria, drinking milk makes up the largest share of milk sold, according to a report from Agrarmarkt Austria (AMA). Total reported milk volume for last year amounted to 32.7 million kg, a slight decline from 2018’s total of 33.1m kg. Drinking milk is the leading product with over 15 million kg, followed by cheese including curd cheese. 11.8 million kg of milk was used to produce cheese, including curd cheese. Other dairy products were made from 3.6 million kg of milk, while 2.3 million kg of milk was required for butter.

The report was broken down into the amount of milk used and the products made from it – drinking milk, butter, cheese including curd cheese and other milk products (cocoa, fruit yogurt, natural yogurt, sour cream, whipped cream).

The state of Vorarlberg reported the highest share of direct sales with 6.1 million kg of raw milk, followed by Lower Austria with six million kg and Upper Austria with 5.3 million kg.

The western areas are always connected to alpine pastures and cheese, so it is not surprising that the majority of cheese was produced for direct marketing in Vorarlberg. Slightly more than five million kg of raw milk were needed in the westernmost state of Austria for the production of mountain cheese, Emmental cheese, other cheese and curd cheese.

With a quantity of 1.9 million kg of raw milk processed into cheese and curd cheese, Tyrol made it to second place.
