Sales of whey drinks continue to rise
Sales of whey drinks in Germany increased by 17% in the first four months of 2001 compared with the same period of the previous year. This built on growth recorded in 2000 when sales grew by over 80% on 1999 to 20,000 tonnes.
Market researcher AC Nielsen is predicting contin- uing expansion for the low fat health drink, mainly due to its scope for innovation.
This trend was re-emphasised by the European Whey Product Association, which has reported an explosion in R&D for whey-based food and pharmaceutical products. Interest is now global, it has said, with many new products expected in the next few years.
