Joseph Heler Cheese has won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Innovation. The Cheshire-based dairy was recognised for having developed and successfully brought to market what is reputed to be the first low fat, natural hard cheese available in Europe.
The cheese, which has a fat content of just 5%, is said to retain the taste and mouthfeel of full fat Cheddar.
The product is made using a combination of novel processes, starter cultures designed to speed up the maturation of the cheese, a unique mix of enzymes that are designed to improve the flavour and texture of the product, and special ingredients which replace the fat and retain the smoothness and feel of full fat Cheddar.
The product is currently produced for Heinz Weight Watchers, and also as a major ingredient for ready-made low fat meals and sandwiches.
Joseph Heler is no stranger to winning awards. It has won many first ribbons at the Nantwich Cheese Show, Royal Welsh Show and the British Cheese Awards.
