Energy concerns in Switzerland

Branchenorganisation Milch (BO MILCH) in Switzerland is watching developments in the energy sector with concern. Should there be a power and gas shortage in the winter months, the federal government’s action plan provides for quotas for the two energy sources for large consumers or, in a next step, for the power grid to be switched off for a few hours.
There are currently no plans to exempt milk producers and processors, like other food processors, from these measures. However, depending on the situation, the Federal Council has the option of exempting certain production and processing companies, which are relevant to basic needs from these measures.
Milk, butter or cream are staple foods. During the pandemic, sales tripled, and some shelves remained empty.
In order to prevent this situation from repeating itself, BO Milch has asked the federal departments responsible for energy supply, to set quotas or even switch off the large consumers of the power grid for a few hours in the milk value chain, in the event of a future power or gas shortage.
