Producer payments under spotlight
The International Dairy Federation (IDF) has published a 16 page survey analysing how farmers are paid for their milk.
Information included in Payment systems for ex-farm milk was obtained from questionnaires completed in 1996 by 22 countries, representing 66% of the IDF’s members.
The majority of respondents, it seems, pay for milk on a volume basis, determine price by negotiation and operate contracts between farmers and dairies. In all countries milk is now collected in bulk, and is refrigerated on the farm.
