Dairy is more sustainable than plant-based, says Global Dairy Platform research

The sustainability of dairy milk versus plant-based beverages has been a consistent conversation in scientific circles, and the April edition in the Global Dairy Platform (a co-founder of the P2DNZ initiative) Perspective Paper Series (found here) explores the topic with findings from a recent study.

In short, when nutrition, socioeconomics and the environment are considered, semi-skimmed milk is a more sustainable choice than plant-based beverages. The article also notes the complications of recommending foods based on single metrics and makes a compelling case for why environmental factors alone should not determine the sustainability of a product. The scientific community is working on developing comprehensive metrics that can assess the various domains of sustainable foods, GDP says.
