Goodbye Dairylea, hello hummus

The changing face of the traditional school lunchbox has been revealed in new research marking the back to school season – as parents ditch the likes of Dairylea and say hello to hummus.

With millions gearing up for a new academic year, the Ryman study delving into the contents of kids’ lunchboxes through the years lays bare a significant shift in culinary preferences over time. While children of previous generations chowed down on cheestrings and penguin bars, these one-time staples are dying out as lifestyle trends and health consciousness take precedence.

The data reveals a significant shift from processed snacks and sugary treats, like Fruit Winders, towards nutritious, wholesome options that cater to a growing demand for health and wellness. The trend aligns with generally improving health awareness. With the link between high sugar intake and childhood obesity clear, caregivers are increasingly vigilant about their child’s food choices.

As a result, Cheesetrings – the number one lunchbox item in years gone by – have now been replaced by hummus and pitta at top spot – proving that not even the humble sandwich is irreplaceable.

Contemporary lunchbox trends further reveal a changing palate and how parents and children are more adventurous when it comes to food. Parents in the 1980s and 1990s may well not even have been able to buy foods like hummus and sushi at their local shop, let alone have considered it as a genuine lunchtime option for their child.

However, once considered out of reach, these food types are now considered mainstream, offering a nutritious alternative to previous staples. Chloe Danskin, head of marketing at Ryman, said: “It’s fascinating to see how our lunchbox favourites have evolved over the years, reflecting broader shifts in lifestyle choices.
“As we continue to prioritise convenience and health, the food our children eat has shifted towards more nutritious choices. At Ryman, we’re committed to providing lunchbox solutions that cater to these changing needs.
“Whether you’re packing a modern, health-conscious lunch or sticking with nostalgic favourites, Ryman offers a wide range of lunchboxes to suit every taste. We’ve got you covered.”
