New light-blocking technology for dairy PET packaging

Avient Corporation, a premier provider of specialized and sustainable materials solutions and services, announced the launch of ColorMatrix Lactra LX Light Blocking Additive for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) packaging. This new technology, intended for dairy packaging applications, enables light-blocking in single-layer PET bottles.

“Light blocking has been traditionally achieved by using multilayer high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and PET packaging,” said Felipe Reichert, global marketing director for colour, additives & inks at Avient Corporation. “Our Lactra LX additive enables blocking of 100% of visible light in monolayer PET containers, protecting and preserving the quality of dairy products and helping to extend shelf life while delivering a bright white color as a solid masterbatch.”

This new technology from Avient is suitable for use in packaging for products such as ultra-high temperature (UHT) liquid dairy containers, which have longer shelf life requirements and are often stored under ambient conditions. Lactra LX additive also offers the advantage of versatility in container designs and shapes, allowing for product differentiation over other rigid packaging solutions and enhancing consumer convenience with easy-to-pour options. Additionally, it provides the opportunity for lightweighting, reducing overall cost without sacrificing performance.

Initially introduced in Europe as ColorMatrix Lactra SX, the new bright white Lactra LX technology is primarily available in North America.
