The US Food and Drug Administration has suspended its quality control programme for the testing of fluid dairy milk and other products, due to reduced capacity in its food safety and nutrition division, the news agency Reuters has reported. The laboratory support for this testing is no longer able to be provided, it notes.
The reduction of 20,000 staff in the Department of Health and Human Services, which includes the FDA, is said to be behind this stoppage. The FDA has also suspended the programmes for accurate testing of bird flu in milk and cheese, as well as the testing for pathogens such as Cyclospora in other products, Reuters notes.
