On 19 June 2025, FrieslandCampina officially opened a fast charger for a fully electric milk transport truck in Gerkesklooster. This truck, owned by carrier Melkweg | Fritom, has been continuously operating in the milk collection pool since the week of opening. The electric milk transport truck in Gerkesklooster is deployed 24/7 – an important step towards more sustainable transport in dairy logistics.

At the opening, a delegation from the Gerkesklooster site team was present, including project leader Folkert de Groot. Representing Melkweg | Fritom were Hugo Rozenboom and several drivers. Also attending were Marcel Ebbelaar and Roland Bolk from FrieslandCampina MilkLogistics, as well as Marion van Schaik from FrieslandCampina’s Global Supply Chain organisation.

Initial operational results are very positive. After a nine to ten-hour run, on average about 30% battery capacity remains. Thanks to the fast charger, the battery is fully recharged within two hours, ready for the next shift. The drivers are enthusiastic about the driving comfort and the quietness that the electric drive provides. Farmers also respond positively: “Collecting milk now happens almost silently.”

This innovation aligns perfectly with FrieslandCampina’s sustainability ambitions. Each year, the company’s milk transport trucks cover around 32 million kilometres in the Netherlands, consuming approximately ten million litres of diesel – responsible for 28 million kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions. Electric driving, supported by favourable energy contracts, offers a valuable and sustainable alternative to diesel. Developments will be closely monitored, and if progress remains positive, the electric fleet will be expanded, both in Gerkesklooster and at other FrieslandCampina locations, the company has reported.
