Somalia has over seven million camels, the most out of any country on earth, notes AP News. It is working on increasing the camel milk output, with one farm recently visited, Beder Camel Farm, producing up to 2.6 litres daily per camel. It produces camel milk yogurts near Mogadishu.
The Somali government is also encouraging this, with a Dairy Act put in place to encourage methods that Beder employs, such as new investments in veterinary care, better feed and modern milking practices, AP reports. The camels are routinely checked by vets, given nutritional supplements, and grazed on scientifically blended fodder as well.
