The British Cheese Board has launched a nationwide search to find a National Anthem for Cheddar. The BCB is calling on choirs, singing groups, budding song writers and Cheddar enthusiasts to pen their ode to the nation’s favourite cheese, with original lyrics set to the patriotic tunes of either God Save the Queen, Land of Hope and Glory or Jerusalem.

Nigel White, secretary of the British Cheese Board says: “Britain may produce over 700 named cheeses, but there’s no doubt that Cheddar is by far and away the nation’s favourite. In this year of celebrating all things British, the BCB is proud to be highlighting the amazing variety and popularity of British Cheddars and joining with UK cheese lovers to find a fitting anthem to this national treasure.”

Shortlisted entries will be put to a public vote via the BCB website http://britishcheese.com . The winning entry will be crowned as the BCB’s National Anthem for Cheddar, and will win two weekend passes to Alex James’ Food and Music festival taking place the first weekend of September. The winner will also receive a year’s supply of British Cheddars, supplied by British Cheese Board members.Entries can be submitted in video or audio format via email to [email protected] . The closing date for entries to be considered is 15th June and the overall winner will be chosen by a public vote from a shortlist of five entries selected by a judging panel of BCB members. The public vote will run until 20th July and the winner will be announced shortly after.
