The seach for perfect cheese on toast

Cheese on toast has long been a British institution and to celebrate one of Britain’s best loved dishes, the British Cheese Board (BCB) has launched a nationwide competition to find the formula for the perfect cheese on toast.
The BCB is urging the public to share their favourite cheese on toast recipes in an attempt to discover the perfect formula for creating one of the country’s favourite snacks. A scientist from the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) will help with a series of scientific tests to determine the best conditions for making the tasty snack before the recipes go up in front of a panel of expert foodies at the RSC’s Chemistry Centre in London. One lucky cheese fan can also win the chance to join the panel and help judge the competition to find the perfect formula.
The British Cheese Board is welcoming recipes made with all types of different cheeses. The eight most original recipes will then be put to the test by an expert panel, led by British Cheese Board Secretary Nigel White and scientist Ruth Neale.
“In celebrating this humble toasted snack, the BCB wants to remind people that cheese is a good value and easy way to feed a family. We also hope to prompt people to think about the variety of British cheeses available, and show that our cheeses are among the best in the world,” White says. “To enter the competition The BCB is looking for cheese on toast recipes, made with all sorts of British cheeses. With over 700 different named British cheeses, cheese lovers will be spoilt for choice when deciding how to top their toast and we can’t wait to see what they have to share. In fact, the more adventurous the recipes, the better. When it comes to winning a spot amongst the prestigious line-up of judges, we’re looking for the cheese fan who can pen the best poem about why British cheese makes the best cheese on toast.”
Neale adds, “We’re delighted to be working alongside the British Cheese Board to put the public’s recipes under the microscope. I’m looking forward to exploring the links between science and food and helping to identify the formula for the perfect way to make cheese on toast. There are so many different British cheeses to choose from and lots of chemistry involved in making each one, so I’m looking forward to seeing how the public’s different topping choices come out in our tests.”
Cheese fans should submit their recipes to [email protected] outlining the types of cheese and bread used, extra toppings, preparation techniques and what makes their recipe the ultimate cheese on toast recipe. Extra marks will be awarded if the recipe has local history or family heritage.
To win a place on the judging panel, email a short poem to [email protected] about why cheese on toast made from British cheese is so delicious. The deadline for entries for both parts of the competition is 12 noon on Friday 26 July.
