Biomilk and non-believers
Germany’s top market research organisation ACNielsen from Frankfurt has found that 16% of consumers do not believe that organic milk and other bio foods are produced in the way claimed by the respective labels, e.g. without artificial fertiliser and pesticide being used on production farms.
Despite this, the bio boom continues in Germany with overproportional increases in sales of organically produced milk and its products. At the beginning of 2005 sales of organic drinking milk represented 3% of total milk turnover. Just 12 months later this proportion had risen to very nearly 5% – and this despite the fact that a litre of biomilk in Germany costs around 60 cents more on average than the conventional product.
