Swiss standoff as Aldi antagonises Alpine retailers

Milk producers and processors in Switzerland are for once supporting Europe’s biggest discounter Aldi in its struggle to secure supplies of dairy products from the country’s wholesalers.

Several of the largest wholesalers and distributors in the country have complained (anonymously) to the national agricultural information service (LID) in Bern that the market leaders among Swiss retailers, Migros and Coop, have terminated contracts with processors who are now supplying Aldi.
The German discounter has only been operating in Switzerland for three months and already has four supermarkets in action.
Both Swiss supermarket chains deny the charges and point out they would only threaten to end contracts where suppliers were delivering goods to Aldi at lower prices.
