Dairy UK’S sustainability seminar

Dairy UK held a seminar in London this week dubbed ‘How Good? How Green? Does Dairy Deliver?’ addressing the sustainability of the dairy industry as a whole.
Experts from the British and global dairy industry discussed plans that are underway to address economic, nutritional and environmental sustainability.
Addressing the issue of environmental sustainability, chief executive of The National Skills Academy for Food and Drink, Justine Fosh, says, “There have been a number of successful initiatives to promote the dairy industry as a career-rich sector. Moving forward, the government needs to work with industry to continue to bridge the skills gap.”
Drawing upon nutritional sustainability, Professor Ian Givens, Professor of Food Chain Nutrition and Head of Food Production & Quality at the University of Reading, says, “Milk is a much misunderstood food, it has a high nutrient density and has various health benefits. We are beginning to see evidence of health problems that are associated with reduced milk consumption nowadays, particularly in young females. The downward consumption trend needs urgent review.”
Dr Judith Bryans, chief executive of Dairy UK, says, “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the speakers who came along to share their expert insights with us today.
“The British and global dairy industry are working together to address the economic, nutritional and environmental challenges in a clear and concise fashion. The sustainability of the dairy industry is paramount – we take these challenges and responsibilities very seriously.”
