The Ice Cream Alliance, the trade body for the UK’s £1bn (€1.14bn) ice cream industry, has appointed Maggie Rush as its new president. Rush, a director of York based Graham’s Ices, has worked in the ice cream business for more than 30 years. Now she will be supporting ice cream businesses across the UK and campaigning to protect the quality of UK ice cream, the organisation says.
“It’s going to be an interesting year as the path towards Brexit unfolds. We will be keeping an eye on potential changes to food regulations and legislation and lobbying the government to ensure regulations are in place that protect the quality and integrity of ice cream,” Rush says.
Graham’s Ices was founded by her husband in 1974 and now has five ice cream vans providing a mixture of street trading and event services. Rush, a former mental health nurse in York, switched career paths in 1985 to work in the family business.
“I thoroughly enjoy working in the ice cream sector and I’m looking forward to meeting with business owners across the UK and flying the flag for the Ice Cream Alliance and promoting great quality ice cream,” she says.
