Heumilch applies for sheep hay milk certification in Brussels

After being granted EU’s “Guaranteed traditional specialty” (g.t.S.) certificate for cow hay milk Arge Heumilch in Austria has now taken another step and submitted an application for this label for sheep and goat hay milk in Brussels.

“The seal gives consumers even more assurance on quality and authenticity,” explains Andreas Geisler, Arge Heumilch coordinator. Sheep and goat’s milk are niche products, which, in addition to drinking milk, are particularly important in cheese production. The spectrum ranges from fresh to soft to cut and hard cheese.The Arge Heumilch Austria has around 8000 hay-milk makers and about 60 processors and is the number one in the production and marketing of hay milk.

The main production areas of hay milk in Austria are Vorarlberg, Tyrol, Salzburg, Upper Austria and Styria. In Austria, the hay milk share of total production is 15%, while in Europe it is only 3%.
