UK -The Dairy Council has marked World Milk Day, celebrated on 1 June, by releasing figures that show the UK is the fourth greatest consumer of milk in the world.

The UK public consumes more than six million tonnes of milk a year, according to the latest figures from 2001, behind the USA, Brazil and Germany.

The most popular milk in the UK is semi-skimmed, and average consumption roughly a pint per person per day.

The Dairy Council has been promoting the health benefits of milk since 1920, and its latest campaign was labelled 3-A-Day, which encouraged people to have three low-fat dairy products every day to boost calcium levels and improve good health.
