Net sales at De Kievit and Borculo Domo, the ingredient divisions of Friesland Coberco Dairy Foods, rose to E387 million in 2000, according to the group’s annual report. This represented a 14% increase on the previous year and there is every indication this growth will continue during 2001.
The report identifies added value as the way forward for the dairy industry with the ingredients sector, especially additives for health and functional foods, as one of the most attractive targets. As well as an increasing emphasis on research and development for new ingredients, the report emphasises the need to find ways of getting products to market faster than ever.
Within Friesland, Borculo Domo, a whey-based ingredient manufacturer, currently manufactures lactose, high-protein whey derivatives, demineralised whey products and creamers. De Kievit, meanwhile, specialises in spray-drying ingredients and creamers.
Friesland will conduct a study this year on how to focus more on special products using the infrastructure in place at De Kievit, which already has an established worldwide marketing network. Borculo, meanwhile, has opened a new lactose factory to cater for growing demand from the pharmaceutical industries.
On its own, De Kievit has made a big contribution to Friesland’s turnover, particularly through its Vana milk fat and vegetable oil-based range of powders and creamers
