Eastern Europe’s dairy market reaches $20 billion mark
The dairy market in Eastern Europe was worth $20 billion last year, according to a new report published by research agency Datamonitor.
Eastern Europe Dairy Food 1998 also reveals that the Czech Republic is the region’s fastest growing dairy market. The country’s sector has grown by 5.3% every year between 1993 and 1997, and Czech citizens now spend an average of $137 a year each on dairy products.
The report also says the decline in dairy consumption in Russia is slowing down, although Russians now consume 64kg of dairy products per head per year compared with 84kg in 1993. Liquid milk consumption has been shrinking by 5%, with demand choked by price rises of 11% per year.
Hungary, meanwhile, is said to be set for renewed dairy growth following a decline prompted by rises in the retail prices of milk and cheese. Datamonitor predicts that the sector will enjoy a compound annual growth rate of 4.1% between 1997 and 2002.
