America may introduce prohibitive tariffs for imports of Roquefort cheese if the EU does not comply with a World Trade Organisation (WTO) ruling calling for it to end its ban on imports of American beef from cattle treated with hormones. Europe has until 13 May to comply with the WTO request, but as yet has made no effort to do so. Ways of resolving the dispute are currently under negotiation and include a proposal for labelling US beef appropriately. Europe insists a resolution is conditional upon further risk assesments.
