Keeping a clean supply chain
The ever-widening horsemeat scandal brings to mind the bad old days of BSE and the horrors visited on the British meat industry. This time, British meat should see an upswing, as consumers realise that they can’t just buy cheap meat and expect to get a product that’s what it says on the box. People are flocking to British butchers (and causing queues, this long-term butcher customer grumbles). This is a shame and something that the gutted Food Standards Agency should address swiftly in order to cause further damage to the processed foods industry. More inspectors up and down the supply chain are required throughout Europe. Customers have a right to buy products that are what they are listed as.
Makes me glad that most dairy is local, but there is a lesson for everyone in the food industry – as more and more dairy processors move to whey production, keeping the supply chain clean and safe is more and more important. Whey is a valuable commodity and one that all dairy processors must make sure stays safe and reliable, no matter where in the world it is made. In the meantime, make mine a butcher’s steak. With a nice glass of milk.
