Support your local food bank

I was leafing through Dairy Farmers of America’s Facebook page, and came upon a set of photos where DFA volunteers were parcelling out boxes of food for distribution at a food bank, somewhere in the US (https://www.facebook.com/dfamilk). In fact, September is Hunger Action Month, so wherever you are located, contact your local food bank and help make a difference, either with donations or with time. (http://feedingamerica.org/foodbank-results.aspx#) It is sometimes quite disheartening to think that in some of the world’s richest countries, there is still a need for food banks – people are living in food poverty. Here in the UK, we have seen rapid growth of the Trussell Trust, (http://www.trusselltrust.org/foodbank-projects) which now has food banks in nearly every county in the country. I would hope that these would be phased out in time, but it seems like there is more need than ever for them.

It is quite fitting that DFA are supporting and helping food banks – dairy for its part is some of the most nutrient-dense foods you can get, and cheap for the price. In a way, dairy has always helped make up nutrient shortfalls, wherever in the world they may be. Let’s keep up the good work.
