News lands this week that Cathedral City has launched a series of snacky, chilled food products into the British market, just in time for the festive season. Get ready for cheese sticks and ham and cheese croquettes for your holiday spread. Plus loaded cheesy fries. Additionally, Kerry’s Smug oat-milk brand has moved into crunchy snack products, cheese strings and quark-based on the go products. It is abandoning its blended oat-milk and cheese products that were based more on in-home eating – I don’t think the sales were ever there on that one.

I do think that this is a sign of our continuing move towards on-the-go and eating small bites instead of bigger meals. It’s about making food more of an event by offering sharing items like fries. It might be a side effect of the global weight loss jabs too – nobody is sitting down to a big plate of macaroni and cheese anymore, when they can eat a nice cheese stick while looking at their phones. I’ve always been a big fan of hors d’ouevres and appetisers myself.

It is interesting that people are turning to dairy to fill that dietary hole in their diets, when they want to eat less because their habits have changed. Dairy offers the nutrition coupled with fullness and mouthfeel that people enjoy. It’s a win-win, really.

Speaking of win-wins, a trip for everyone to Stoneleigh is guaranteed to supply you with relevant information on products and processes for the dairy sector, ranging from the Society of Dairy Technology‘s meeting on 28 October to our own two-day showcase of  innovation, technical excellence and building connections. If you’re an engineer, a technical professional, or part of a team working in dairy processing, packaging, or technology, this is your space to see the latest solutions up close, meet and network with people who are shaping the industry and sharing ideas and finding new ways to improve processes. Don’t miss out and register today.
