Whey and lactose ingredients on upswing

A
recent report from market analysts 3A Busines Consulting in Denmark says that whey and lactose ingredients continue to show positive growth rates in volume and value. However, the report warns that the prices have weakened for most products this year compared with 2011. “It is tempting to say that demand for whey and lactose just keeps growing, irrespective of significant price volatility over the last five years and the relative poor performance of the global economy,” notes Tage Affertsholt, partner at 3A.
Whey powder, whey proteins and whey protein fractions had a global market value of US$7.2bn (€5.8bn) in 2011, more than 20% above 2010. It is estimated that they will increase to US$8.5bn (€6.8bn) by 2015. Particular areas of improvement are high-end protein products, such as WPC80, isolates and hydrolysates, which have seen double digit growth. Nutritional sectors inclduing infant formulas, clinical nutrition and sports nutrition are mainly responsible for the strong growth of high-end products, the report says.
