New product launches with Greek yogurt have amounted to nearly 8% of the total yogurt launches worldwide over the past year, according to a report from Innova Market Insights. This is an increase from less than 2% five years previously, with actual launches up by more than five times over the five-year period. The trend began in North America and launches of Greek and Greek-style products amounted to 29% of total yogurt starts in the US last year. This compares to 15% in Australia and nearly 10% in Western Europe.

Chobani, the dominant brand in the US, is now launching in the UK. Innova notes that the next sector to have a Greek-style makeover is frozen yogurt, which is popular in the US. Greek-style launches over the past few months in the States have included a frozen version of the Stonyfield Oikos organic brand from Dannon and Greek-style frozen yogurt options from Ben & Jerry’s.
