FDA trans fat listings

A new rule by the Food and Drug Adminisration on listing trans fatty acids is now effective.

Manufacturers can use dairy ingredients such as whey protein in a wealth of products with reduced trans fat, from baked goods to salad dressings and snacks, but more than half a gram of trans fat must be listed on the nutrition facts labels directly under the saturated fat listing.
The FDA’s new labelling requirement is based on scientific evidence that shows consumption of trans fat raises low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and increases the risk of heart disease. However, research shows that some naturally occurring trans fat may have health benefits. For example, conjugated linoleic acid, a trans fatty acid found in dairy foods has been shown to have potential cancer-inhibiting properties. The new rule does not require CLA to be included in the labelling of trans fat.
