GREECE – Food inspection leaders have resigned after dairy company Fage recalled 350,000 plastic containers of yogurt, due to alleged consumer complaints.

It was claimed the products were recalled before reaching stores, but authorities failed to promptly notify the European Commission (EU) of the yogurt recall – which is under investigation.

The resignations of Central Food Control Agency (EFET) president Nikos Katsaros and general manager Christos Apostolopoulos were accepted because of the delay in carrying out inspections, the development ministry’s political leadership was not notified, and the public was not informed.

Government officials said the delayed reaction and the lack of providing timely information to consumers was not in line with the government’s decision to upgrade and support EFET in order to protect public health.
