Dairy UK celebrates World School Milk Day

Dairy UK is celebrating World School Milk Day today and backing The Dairy Council’s initiative calling on primary schools across the UK to get moving and learn about dairy nutrition.

Being active, eating well and making the right choices is key to maintaining a healthy weight. On World School Milk Day, primary school children can learn about the nutrients in milk and dairy which help to fuel healthy growth and development.

To celebrate the nutritional benefits and overall goodness of milk, The Dairy Council is calling on primary schools across the country to transform by dancing. Other activities include downloading a presentation from The Dairy Council’s website to teach the class about the benefits of milk; holding a pop quiz or other competitions in class; or making milkshakes.

Dr Judith Bryans, chief executive of Dairy UK, says, “World School Milk Day is a great opportunity to help children understand why making healthy eating and drinking choices matters so much.

“It is essential that children understand the nutritional value of foods and the role milk can play in their diet, especially as we continue to see rising levels of childhood obesity worldwide. Milk is an excellent source of essential nutrients for growth and development and consuming milk is an easy way for children to help meet their recommended daily intake of calcium.

“It’s great to see that so many schools have signed up to get involved with The Dairy Council’s initiative which is all about finding fun ways to encourage children to be physically active and enjoy milk. I’m really looking forward to watching all these great dancing videos.”

Erica Hocking, senior nutrition scientist at The Dairy Council, adds, “At primary school age, it is essential that children should have a healthy, balanced diet and get plenty of physical activity to help them maintain a healthy weight as they get older.

“We would like to thank all of the schools across the UK who are supporting our initiative – milk is an easy, tasty and affordable way to help children to get their recommended daily allowance of calcium, protein and iodine and we hope pupils have enjoyed learning about milk today.”
